Karl Marx’s London: guided walking tour with a historian

Take a tour through the streets of Soho, the bustling central London district which in the 1850s was home to thousands of radical political exiles - including the young German philosopher Karl Marx. Guided by Dr Thomas Jones, an expert and scholar in refugee history, you’ll see the sites that shaped the lives of Marx and his growing family as they struggled to establish themselves in an unfamiliar country where they would spend the rest of their lives. We’ll assemble in Leicester Square, where in 1849 the Marxes joined hundreds of refugees escaping the collapse of Europe’s 1848 revolutions and found shelter at the nearby German Hotel. We’ll go on to visit the Marx residences at Dean Street, where they contended with poverty and disease as they navigated the perils of life in mid-Victorian London. We’ll see the headquarters the Communist League and the International Working Men’s Association, radical societies that Marx joined and for which he produced some of his most famous writing, including the Communist Manifesto. Along Soho’s winding streets, we’ll see the pubs and café’s where Marx’s fellow exiles gathered and made their plans to reignite revolution in Europe. As we stroll, Dr Jones will explain the details Marx’s life in exile, the impact of his time in exile on his ideas, and why London – and Britain- was the asylum of choice for refugees trying to change the world.

Discover London’s scenic Hampstead Heath through the poems and life of John Keats, a poet I’ve dedicated much of my career to exploring. • We’ll start at Keats’ house and walk around his gardens, which are beautifully preserved by the Keats Society. • Next, we’ll venture out onto the Heath, the patch of nature that inspired not only Keats but also T.S. Eliot, Virginia Woolf, Francis Bacon, and many other writers and artists. • Finally, we’ll end up at one of Keats’ old haunts: The Flask, a picturesque 1663 pub with a history full of highwaymen, strange initiation rites, and ghosts—in other words, the perfect setting for a poetry workshop. On this walking tour, I’ll use Jane’s letters and novels to bring the author’s London to life, uncovering the stories behind every stop. • We’ll start at the site of the hotel where Jane stayed with her family in the late 18th century. • We’ll journey past the gardens, theatres and assembly rooms that Jane visited. Some were prime spots on the “marriage market.” • On our walk through Mayfair, St. James’s and Covent Garden, we’ll learn about her publishing journey from start to finish, including taking in the home of the Prince Regent, with whom Jane had an intriguing relationship. You’ll come away with a richer understanding of Regency society, its allure, and its vices—all seen through Jane’s eyes. Plus, you'll take away a mini guide to Jane's London to remember her experiences by. The next time you read her novels, you’ll be able to picture some of the places she writes about!

Having written several books and history documentaries, this is my first season of hosting tours and I can't wait to share with you all I know about London, war and royalty. On this walking tour of World War II landmarks and memorials, there will be plenty exclusive first-hand stories behind the world's most outstanding monuments to war. • Starting near London's commemorative altar - Hyde Park Corner - I’ll guide you around the city’s most iconic statues and explain how two world wars pushed Britain into a new space and demanded a capital rethink on how to honour the fallen. • From the Bomber Command Memorial to the Cenotaph via mighty Winston Churchill, you’ll learn how political personalities and royalty shaped London's wartime identity and changed ideas of Britishness forever. • During the tour, we’ll pause for photo opportunities and questions. Invariably sights and stories pique interest and there will be plenty of opportunity purse individual quests for further information. By the end of our walk, you’ll have more personal understanding of wartime Britain and a connection to the heroic lives that the memorials and statues represent. Learn how to make a sterling silver ring from scratch, with our AWARD WINNING EXPERIENCE! Start off by marking your silver to the length you require by choosing which finger you would like it on. Then, you'll use a handsaw to cut it to size, you'll learn how to form the ring, using a mallet to shape it to the ring mandrel. You'll watch as it is soldered in front of you by an expert tutor—all the time, she will explain exactly what she is doing. Then you'll learn to file it by using different hand files—this is fun, as it is when you get to individualize your ring, deciding what curve you would like it to have. This can make a great difference to the end result. Next, you'll choose from three very different textures. You get to use your creativity with the planishing hammer to achieve the texture you require. People love this part as it's when you make your ring truly individual. Finally you get to choose your polish. Some people like it polished only on the inside, to give it an artistic/rustic look. Others like the glittery sparkle of a fully polished ring. It's your decision. Then the best bit—you get to keep your ring! It's the ultimate souvenir for remembering your trip to Ireland. Enjoy! At Belfast City Hall you will be provided with an audio headset and receiver so you don’t miss a word. You’ll visit the City Hall before walking to the Peace Walls, approximately 90 minutes. You’ll receive a full, detailed and objective commentary to provide you with the historical and political background to ‘the Troubles’ but the tour is not in chronological order, it relates to places it passes. Please note that a good to fluent command of English is required. Stopping at the International Wall, you’ll get a chance to view the political murals before you visit the Walls. There is ample time for photographs. You’ll return to Belfast City Centre, where you visit the Cathedral Quarter. You’ll meander in and out of historic entries, see the sights and see what’s hidden in plain sight. You’ll learn about our radical history, and the culture and art that makes Belfast such a vibrant and exciting city. You'll take in the City Centre & Albert Clock before the tour finishes in a historic church. You walk inside, you walk back to the late 1700s to a time of revolution and radicalism. Belfast is a city of contrasts, and the tour is designed to reflect that. Expect to be entertained, engaged and informed. The pace of this tour is moderate. You will walk approximately 3.5 miles in 2.5 to 3 hours. We sometimes have 4 seasons in one day, so dress appropriately.

In a beautiful and secret location near Loch Ness with celtic hanging rings and altar where dressed in traditional Scottish dress I will explain this full celtic ritual of handfasting. After the traditional gaelic introduction the rest of the ceremony will be in english and I will join your hands together and you will repeat the old vows of binding from long ago. You will be offered the chance to recite your own vows after this if you wish. After the ceremony you can relax with your loved one and a romantic and decadent Scottish gourmet picnic and drinks complete with fire, rugs, blankets, crockery etc. Other things to note This is not a legally binding ceremony and available for lovers, married couples, same sex and mixed sex couples alike.
